They had adjusted their clothing and were finishing their drinks when the doorbell rang. Stone picked up the phone. âYes?â
âItâs Dino.â
Stone pressed a button and heard Dino enter the house. âItâs Dino Bacchetti,â he said to Maren.
âHow does my lipstick look?â she asked.
âPerfect.â
Dino knocked on the study door. âCome in!â Stone answered.
The door opened. âWhy was the door closed?â he asked.
âThere was a draft,â Stone replied. âThis is the FBIâs deputy director for criminal investigations, Maren Gustav,â he said. âSheâs taken over the Clark business.â
Dino shook her hand and pulled up a chair. He looked at them oddly, as if something were amiss.
âWeâre having Grand Marnier,â Stone said. âCan I get you something?â
Dino stood and walked to the bar. âIâll get myself a Scotch,â he replied, then did so and returned to his seat.
âWell, Director,â Dino said. âHow did you come to be on this case?â
âSince one of the victims, Ms. Carlyle, was a federal employee, that makes this a federal case. The president personally asked me to take it over.â
âIâm an admirer of the presidentâs judgment,â Dino said.
âThank you.â
âWelcome to the case. It will be nice having someone in charge who is not in the bag or an idiot.â
Maren laughed. âThank you again.â
âHas Stone taken you through the case?â
âLetâs say that we have left no Stone unturned,â she replied.
Dinoâs eyes narrowed. âHave you an opinion of whom we should suspect?â he asked.
âI believe that there are at least two suspects, possibly more,â Maren said. âAnd one abettor.â
âDo you have enough for an arrest?â he asked.
âNot until we turn one of them.â
âWhoâs your candidate for turning?â
âI think Little Debby is the stupidest, so letâs start with her; Iâll go see her on my return to Washington.â
âAnd when will that be?â
âThat remains to be seen.â
âIs Viv in town?â Stone asked.
âShe is,â Dino replied.
âMaren, will you join the Bacchettis and me for dinner?â
âIâd love to. Iâd like a little nap and to freshen up. May I do that here, instead of returning to my hotel?â
âOf course,â Stone said. âLet me show you upstairs. Excuse me for a moment, Dino.â
âGo right ahead.â
Stone took her up in the elevator and led her to the master suite.
âThis is lovely,â she said. âI believe I owe you something.â Her hand wandered to his zipper.
âYou may repay after dinner,â Stone said. âI shouldnât keep Dino waiting. There are arrests to be made in this city.â He kissed her on the forehead and left her to it.
Dino was gazing into the fire, sipping his Scotch when Stone returned. âI booked us into Patroon, in your absence.â
âThank you.â
âWhat the fuck was going on when I arrived? There was something in the air.â
âThere was no fucking going on,â Stone replied firmly. âYouâre not happy, are you, unless you suspect someone of something.â
âIâm usually right,â Dino said. âI must say, the quality of management at the Bureau is improving.â
âI canât argue with that.â
âHow do you find these women?â
âHolly sent this one.â
âI guess she feels guilty about leaving you without sex.â
âNonsense. I asked her to goose the FBI to get moving on this, and she went right to the top.
